Backstory
Daji was a kind and thoughtful girl, yet her gangly body, shy demeanour and the fact that her parents were poor labourers, caused her to be targeted mercilessly by the other children of her village. Even when the teasing words grew into more serious acts such as throwing stones and stealing her books, the adults of the village, including her own parents, ignored it, claiming they were merely harmless childish pranks. Daji suspected that this was because the ringleader, a boy named Huan-Rei, was the son of the village chieftain.
